A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
